Speeding Tickets from Space?

April 22, 2010 1 comment

Another new technology is being tested to reduce speeding.  For those of us who have a heavy foot and tend to drive fast, this isn’t good news.  Radar detectors and other such devices may become obsolete if the “Speedspike” system takes off.   The good news is that it doesn’t seem to be able to handle short bursts of speed (at least not yet), but can measure accurate speeds over long distances.  So if you’re planning on driving that BMW Convertible or Maserati convertible on your next road trip, enjoy the speed while  you can.

From a post on Slashdot and an article on the UK news site The Telegraph, here are some more details:

Satellites being used to catch speeders as a test in the UK

A new kind of speed camera that uses satellites to measure average speed over long distances is being tested in Britain. The “Speedspike” system combines plate reading technology with a global positioning satellite receiver to calculate average speed between any two points in the area being monitored. From the article: “Details of the trials are contained in a House of Commons report. The company said in its evidence that the cameras enabled ‘number plate capture in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day.’ It also referred to the system’s ‘low cost’ and ease of installation.” I can’t wait to see the episode of MythBusters where they try to avoid getting a speeding ticket from a satellite.

At millions of dollars a pop, satellites aren’t exactly “affordable” but I suppose that the increased revenue from all the new speeding tickets, without the costs of adding more policemen, could make this pay for itself pretty quickly.

License number plate capture regardless of weather conditi0ns…wow. That’s pretty amazing.

Happy and safe driving!

Toward a New Land Speed Record: the North American Eagle “Turbojet Car”

We found a really interesting article on XConomy Seattle and just had to share it with you.  Ed Shadle, 68, and Keith Zanghi, 55, partners and co-owners of the North American Eagle, are nearing the end of “a more than 11-year journey to build the fastest land vehicle in the world. The goal: 800 miles per hour.”  That’s faster than the speed of sound.  According to Wikipedia, “In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343 meters per second (1,125 ft/s). This equates to 1,236 kilometers per hour (768 mph), or about one kilometer in three seconds and about one mile in five seconds.”

There are a number of competitors to break the current world record for land speed of 763.1 mph, held by Great Britain’s Richard Noble and Andy Green since 1997 with their ThrustSSC.  To set the new record and beat its competitors,

the North American Eagle will have to beat the previous record holders by one percent, meaning that it will need to be clocked at a speed of 770.7 mph for a distance of one mile, twice within a 60-minute time period (going in opposite directions). The two measurements, taken to ensure there is no tailwind advantage, are averaged to give a final speed. In order to push the Eagle even harder, the team has made a number of additions to the engine, including switching from a two-line to a four-line burner, allowing twice as much fuel to be pumped into the afterburner in the same amount of time, and adding about 2,000 more horsepower to the engine.

That, my friends, is FAST and POWERFUL.  Take a look at the North American Eagle:

The North American Eagle: Future World Land Speed Record Holder?

The North American Eagle: Future World Land Speed Record Holder?

The North American Eagle is a 56-foot-long tubular car built from the fuselage of a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. Shadle and his crew are all based in Washington state.

For both Shadle and Zanghi, the thirst for speed was born out of a love of drag racing at an early age. And naturally, like any “typical teenager of that era,” as Shadle calls himself, drag racing led to more racing at higher speeds, and eventually, flight.

“For me, it started back when I was just a kid back in the late ‘40s, early ‘50s. My uncles were all back from World War II and they got into stock car racing—the old jalopies running on dirt tracks. And of course we used to go to the races, so I’d hang out in the pits and watch my hero uncles,” Shadle said. “My first drag race on a real strip was at an airport. We raced on Friday nights for 50 cents and you could race all night.” Later, in his 20s, Shadle joined the Air Force and developed his career as a pilot.

“Just like Ed, we all grew up with the space program. The Mercury astronauts were my heroes—the Gemini and Apollo [as well]. All I did was build model airplanes when I was a kid,” Zanghi said.

Wish them luck, success, and safety as they speed towards and through the sound barrier!  I wonder if they’ll play Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” at the victory celebration party?  I think it’s appropriate.

Driverless Cars on the Silk Road from Rome to Shanghai

This looks like it will be a very interesting experiment – green-powered driverless cars.  This summer, Italian company VisLab is participating in the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China.   The project is partially funded by the European Research Council, or ERC, to demonstrate the possibility of transporting goods from one continent to another in new ways, specifically:

– with Green-powered, non-polluting vehicles

– with almost no human intervention

The trip will begin in Rome, and will collect some goods throughout the trip for eventual delivery to Shanghai.  This will be the first trip like this in history.   Here’s a map of the route:

route map for driverless car test Vislab Intercontinental Autonomous Challenge

The Vislab Intercontinental Autonomous Challenge

From VisLab’s web page about this project:

The idea

The aim is to demonstrate, through an extensive and impressive test, that the current technology is mature enough for the deployment of non-polluting and no-oil based autonomous vehicles in real conditions. Moreover the Municipality of Rome, an active player in  this project, is planning to exploit these vehicles downtown to deliver goods to shops, collect trash, and arrange sustainable mobility in the last mile.

The vehicles

Two electric vehicles will perform a 13,000 km trip mainly powered by solar energy, with no driver; two backup vehicles will be part of the trip as well. As a support, 4 Overland trucks will follow the expedition to provide a mechanic shop, storage, and accommodation; finally two additional trucks will be used for media coverage and will be equipped for live satellite broadcasting.

The cars are loaded with computing power and get continual real-time data about their surroundings through a series of onboard cameras and GPS data.  For this trip, the first car will require occasional human intervention, while the second is planned to be 100% driverless based on line-of-sight data, GPS data and more, some of which will be transmitted from the first car.

There are some videos available on the VisLab website and, though they’re in Italian, you can still get an idea about how it works.

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy driving, especially on long, winding stretches of road.  And that holds especially true for a sports car.  That said, moving towards having automated driving in cities could free us up to be more productive during our commute times.  Maybe this is the next step towards the “Johnny Cab” in the Arnold Schwartzenegger Sci-Fi classic, Total Recall? (Careful, there is some strong language in the video that might not be suitable for work).

Maybe one day we’ll have some of these available at our pre-owned luxury car dealership here at Select Luxury Cars?  For a Ferrari or Aston Martin, I like them more old-school – manual transmission, so as to feel more one with the road.  But for a Rolls-Royce or a Mercedes SUV?  Maybe.

2010 Porsche Panamera S

I honestly have no idea where to start on this one. It has taken Porsche all of its life to produce this car- and let me start by saying- it is simply the best four door sedan you can buy today. The ride is pure Porsche, and while driving it, you forget you are driving a four door saloon. Since it first went on sale in October, Porsche has nearly sold 5,000 of these cars- with over half of them being turbo models- making it a huge success. I have driven them all from Mercedes, Maserati, BMW, Audi- all the luxury sedan manufacturers. And the Porsche simply blows all of them right out of the water. It corners like a Porsche, drives like a Porsche, and the interior is distinctively Porsche.

Porsche Panamera S Exterior

Even though Volkswagen recently purchased Porsche, this car is still the one of the best Saloon cars I’ve ever driven. The Audi S8, Mercedes S63 AMG, Maserati Quattroporte, and others by the major luxury brands- can’t even compare- Especially when you drive them all- then step into the Porsche. Under the hood, it shared the same base motor with the Cayenne- which is a brilliant motor.

Porsche Panamera S Interior

The Interior is one of the best I’ve ever seen used in a car. From the drivers seat, you still have the iconic 5 gauges made famous by the 911, however in the fourth gauge, you have a screen that shows where you are in the Navigation, or allows you to toggle though your iPod or phone. You still have the left-hand ignition, and three spoke steering wheel- all typically Porsche. The controls are daunting at first, but once you use them after ten minutes, they become very easy to learn and use. You even have the LED running lights that are now standard on most 911s and Caymans.

Porsche Panamera S Interior- Fourth Gauge

This particular car just barely has 1600 miles, and is Carfax certified.

  • 19″ Panamera Turbo Wheels
  • XM and Bluetooth
