E39 BMW M5…. Still fast, still sleek.

February 17, 2012 Leave a comment

When we think about the year, 2012, its easy to wonder where all the time has gone. When things dated 2002 for example are already 10 years old, its hard to imagination how far we have come since then. Since 2003, BMW has introduced 2 new M5 models, each with more power than the last. But lets not forget about 2003, because at the time the M5 was the car to have!

The E39 M5 features a 4.9L V8 with an absurd 400 HP. Coupled with the luxurious interior, plenty of legroom in the back, and a solid 6-speed manual transmission, the M5 was a well rounded car that would absolutely knock your socks off.

Well, now that it is 9 years old, you can own a M5 for a fraction of the price! Prices average around 20k depending on many factors, but at the end of the day you get a 400 HP luxury sedan for the price of a Honda Accord! Thats just nuts!

Before you go and say “well I dont need an M5, I’d be happy with an Accord” I encourage you to stop and think about that. While some people would be happy with the Accord, many would also love to feel the torque from that incredible V8 or hear the quad exhaust drone as you put your foot down on the interstate entry ramp. You just cant beat the smile you get when you turn the key and hear that V8 turn over in the morning, because BMW has done the impossible: given you a fun car that you can also put the family in without sacrificing comfort or trunk space.

The M5 features a first for BMW: Drive by Wire. What that means for you is instant throttle response as the computer opens the 8 individual throttle bodies faster than your foot could have on its own. Drive By Wire has become standard in every BMW ever since, and they certainly started it off right with the M5.

The engine has a 7000 RPM redline, and you feel the umph of the torque as soon as you get above 2000, so be careful letting your foot slip as you cruise down the highway! Perhaps one of the only limitations of the M5 is that it doesn’t get the most respectable gas mileage… feeding 8 hungry cylinders does take some fuel so you have to make the trade off between exhilarating performance and MPG’s.

All in all, I love the E39 M5. The feel of that V8 is something that not many new cars can replicate. Its smooth yet powerful and really shows you whose boss with all of the usable power. For it’s size, the car is very nimble and drives remarkably smoothly while still being able to take a corner at impressive speeds without even thinking twice (You might want to make sure your rear passengers have their seat belts on first though!). The car fails to show its age anywhere, its both as nimble and as responsive as you would expect any ///M car to be.

So if you are looking for a affordable performance car for around $20,000 but still want to be able to take people for a road trip comfortable, the E39 M5 should certainly be worth a fair bit of consideration.

Big Things Can Come in Small Packages…

2008 SLK55 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLK is a small roadster with a lot of flare. It has nice lines, a short nose, plenty of room in the cabin, and a retractable hard convertible top. There is a lot to love, but in 2008 Mercedes made 3 different specs. The SLK280 featured a 3.0 L V6 with over 220 HP (not too bad in a small car), and the SLK350 has a 3.5L V6 with 268HP. These are wonderful little roadsters that are perfect for getting the wind in your hair on a sunny day.

Mercedes did create a third SLK though, and its a totally different machine. The SLK55 AMG features a 5.5L V8 with 355 HP. And it is an absolute monster.

Quad Exhaust

From the moment you start it up you know that the SLK55 is something to be contended with. Its quad exhaust gurgles and rumbles as the 5.5L V8 warms up and as soon as you get your foot near the gas it just opens up. There is a ton of torque in the low rev band, and it just gets better as the HP kicks in with more hard acceleration. The car is rear wheel drive however, so you will want to be careful getting off the line since all of that engine doesnt have much weight to toy around.

The SLK55.5L AMG Engine5 isnt a perfect car though, for 5.5L you really would expect the HP numbers to be a bit more impressive. Granted, when you are behind the wheel it feels like power – numbers like 500 or 355 dont really make much difference since you are still going way faster than the last time you looked at the dash. The SLK55 is an automatic, and the shifts are smooth and its very easy to get going off the line (without doing anything embarrassing). When you leave the car in standard mode you can simply drive the car like any other 14 mpg roadster. But as soon as you put your foot down, or hit the paddles to take shifting into your own hands the engine growls and come to life. Then, you know you arent just in some cute little roadster: youre in the smallest AMG V8 monster ever and having an absolute blast!

Perhaps Performance isn’t Just a Dream…

January 27, 2012 Leave a comment

Lets be honest with ourselves for a second – we have all dreamed of owning a fast car. Be it the red Ferrari, yellow Lamborghini or the stunning Aston Martin Rapide. We all have that urge deep down that wants a cool, fast car but perhaps its practicality or the cost that has kept us from jumping into the ride of lives.

Well, with used cars a lot can change. You can buy a $440,000 Porsche for near $300,000 or buy a $120,000 7 Series for under $80,000 just a few years later. Go back a few more years and you get some unbelievable deals on cars you could only dream about driving – much less owning.

The prime example of this would be the perfect compromise between a family sedan and a sports car. Often referred to as the ultimate sports sedan… you guessed it: The BMW M5. Now for most of us, the E60 M5 (the one with the 500 HP V10 – Yeah that one..) is still a little out of reach at around $40,000. But often we forget about the E39. Built between 1996 and 2003, the E39 is a brilliant car and even more so when we see one with the ///M badge on the back.

2003 BMW M5 AngleThe E39 M5 features a 400 HP 5.0 Liter V8, quad exhaust, and a 6 speed manual transmission. Yes, 400 HP! Now you may be thinking that there is no way on earth you can afford a 400 HP luxury sedan, but you may be mistaken. E39 M5’s list for around $20,000 – with mileage being the big decision maker here. Sadly, the M5 is often customized and is “violated” so you should be careful and have the car inspected before you purchase – however thats true for any used car! So if you can find one, and it has acceptable mileage, the E39 M5 could allow you to live your dreams of having a “fun” car without destroying your bank account!

Other cars with similar stats would include the Jaguar XJR which features a supercharged, 400HP V8 and gorgeous styling or the Mercedes E55 AMG which features an astounding 469 HP and 516 ft/lb of torque! Cars we used to only dream about are now much more “available” to those of us who don’t just go out and buy a new car every year.

So while looking for your next used car, dont just make the immediate assumption the you can’t have a sports car or a luxury car. Give it a try and see what you can find!

Stay tuned – our E39 M5 road review is on the way!

A first for AMG…

2011 SLS AMG

2011 SLS AMG

There is a first for everything. Your first car, your first love, or your first child. This month, we get to take a look at something special, AMG’s first car. See, until now AMG has been the performance division of Mercedes, making already great cars even better. This time around, Mercedes let AMG handle the entire design from paper to production and they have done an incredible job giving us the SLS AMG.

The SLS is a tribute car to the classic Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, but with a more modern interpretation of that classic styling. Just like the 300SL, the SLS features Gullwing doors that make quite a statement to anyone lucky enough to see it. But far beyond the looks, and yes it a gorgeous car, the car is a performance machine born and bred. The SLS features AMG’s 6.3 Liter V8 which is able to produce a smile inducing 563 HP and 480 lb ft of torque. That’s enough power to rocket the 3500 lb coupe to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds – if you can keep traction that is. The SLS sits on 20” wheels in the back and 19’s in the front. The wheelbase is long, and the driver is positioned close to the rear axle. The engine sits way up front and is connected to the rear wheels via AMG’s terrific 7 speed dual clutch automated manual gearbox and a carbon fiber driveshaft.

The car is an absolute riot on the road. From the very instant you push the start button and hear the exhaust growl, you know you are in for something magical. Step on the accelerator just a bit and the roar of the hand built V-8 will let your other senses know it’s time to hold on. Fortunately, AMG included monster 6 piston front brakes and 4 piston rears to quickly bring you back to reality.

Perhaps the only thing missing on the SLS is auto closing doors. But let’s step back, look at the stunning lines, listen to the engine rumble and remember this is a performance car. AMG’s engineers decided not to let the doors close on their own to save 80 pounds. I believe when you are sitting at red light with a clear, open stretch of road ahead, you can forgive this small inconvenience. AMG gave the world an incredible machine only a few will ever experience. Not a bad first try. We can only imagine what their second will be like.
