My Daughters Car

So I got my daughter a car (Mazda Protégé) on Craig’s List last week. It turned out to be a pretty good car. It needed some minor TLC, as expected, but overall it was a good deal. We had to buy new tires. I will not name the brand. Being a 1998 model, I figured I would save some money by purchasing a set of discount tires. What a Big Mistake!!
Saturday night I was driving the car when the inside of one tire shredded and blew off the rim. It was a very scary thing to have happen at 60 mph. I’m just glad it happened when I was driving the car and not her. I took the car to have the tire replaced. They took the old tire (new tire) off the rim and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The entire inside of the tire was completely shredded and came spilling out. The guy at the tire place told me that brand of tire is a very cheap brand and they do not sell it at their place because of too many problems. So the lesson I learned this weekend was not to take the cheap route when it comes to my child’s safety behind the wheel and to ALWAYS do better when researching parts for her car. I suggest you all do the same.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe made its first appearance, Mercedes launched its CLS-Class so long ago that it’s already well into its second generation, so the world figured BMW should have had a rival before now.

In fairness, BMW hasn’t been completely idle these past few years. It introduced a white-space car of its own: the 5 Series GT, which hasn’t been enthusiastically received. Maybe the product planners should have shuffled the pack and launched the 6 Gran Coupe ahead of the 5 Gran Turismo. The 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe seems set to soar. It looks gorgeous.

Actually, the Gran Coupe isn’t quite a direct CLS competitor. It’s bigger, and the V-8 model will be more expensive than the base CLS550. Couple the large, 6 Series-like footprint with a low roof, and it has a commanding, graceful presence. Viewing it from the front or rear, you’re struck by how much wider the lower body is. It’s less ornamented than the second-gen Mercedes CLS, but not as plain-surfaced as the Porsche Panamera.

The nose and tail are the same as the 6 Series coupe, minus a couple of decorative chrome fillets in the front clip. The front doors are shorter than the 6 coupe’s, but the rears overcompensate. They open onto a bench that will seat two people in decent comfort, three in a pinch. Rear legroom certainly isn’t the match of a large sedan, but headspace is adequate even for taller men.

At the wheel, the dash and front seats mostly are a carbon copy of the 6 Series layout. This gives you a low and snug driving position. It feels like a car for driving far and fast.

So the Gran Coupe walks onto the luxury-coupe stage able to hold it’s own and become a benchmark for competing car companies.

Did You Know…? Insurance Costs!

April 30, 2012 Leave a comment

Do you know if your auto insurance carrier offers additional discounts? My wife and I bought our daughter a car and titled it in her name. We called GEICO to remove her from our policy and start her own. During the enrollment, the representative asked her questions about her driving and college. To my surprise, she was entitled to discounts for:

 Being a college student
 High GPA
 Never being in an accident
 Completing a defensive driving course
 Completing Driver’s Education in high school

Since she attends college out of state, we signed up for membership with AAA so she could have road side assistance. Our AAA Premier Membership benefits includes more than car rentals and discounts at hotels. We can take advantage of savings on:

 Pet friendly discounts at retailers, including Walmart.com and Target.com
 Resorts and Disney vacations
 Products and Services including LifeLock Identity Theft Protection

We also discovered our membership will offer discounts for routine eye exams, lenses and eyewear at participating Target and Pearle Vision.

So when you get an opportunity, check with your auto insurance carrier to find out what discounts are available to you and your family.

“My Kid Wouldn’t Do That”

April 23, 2012 Leave a comment

My teenage son is preparing to take his written test for his learner’s permit next week. Until now, I haven’t spent much time talking to him about being a responsible driver. This weekend my wife and I sat with him and watched Dateline’s “My Kid Would Never Do That: Driving.” They focused on teens making decisions about texting while driving, getting in the car with a teen that had been drinking or said they were high. The premise of the show was parents secretly putting their teens to the test to see what they would do if faced with these scenarios. All of the parents said they had some sort of conversation with their child about what not to do and to call home if they need a ride. The parents were 99% sure their teens would not get in the car under these circumstances, but most of them did.
My 19 year old daughter started driving when she was 15. I would like to believe she would not put herself in harm’s way. My wife always discussed things with her like not driving with the music too loud, letting her friends change the radio station and answer her cell phone if it rings, and making sure her friends buckle up. The best we could hope for is some of the things we taught her would kick in at the right time when faced with those situations.
Last year one of my daughter’s friends was driving from her college in SC to pick her up in NC, so they could come home for the weekend. It was around 8am when her friend fell asleep behind the wheel. She lost control of the car and it spun around 360 degrees on the highway ending up facing the opposite way. Fortunately, there were few cars on the road and she was not injured. When my daughter reached home, she told us what happened to her friend on the way to pick her up. I was pleased when she told me she stayed on the phone with her friend until she reached my daughter’s dorm. Needless to say, my daughter drove from NC to Atlanta.
As my son spends this week preparing to pass his test, I will definitely take time to go over do’s and don’ts of the roads, peer pressure, driving with his friends and obeying the law(s). Parents please take the time to talk to your children about what they need to do when getting in the car with friends. Hopefully, they will be the voice of reason in a real life situation.

The Open Road

March 26, 2012 Leave a comment

It’s been about nine years since I owned a motorcycle.  Today my wife and I took a road trip that was different from anything we experienced.  We road with our neighbors and about 50 other cruisers on a “trip to nowhere.”

During the spring and summer, I hear my neighbors revving up their bikes on Sunday mornings.  I always wanted to join them but I sold my Yamaha R1 (race bike) before I moved to Georgia.  Last year for my birthday, my wife surprised me with a Victory Cross Country (cruiser bike.) Today was our first ride of the season.  I have to say, it was exciting to be back on a motorcycle.

We logged in almost 300 miles on a great back road trip through Northeast Georgia.  We stopped at a marina for lunch, took pictures , mingled and shared our bike stories.  When we headed back home, fatigue started to set in.  The closer we got to our exit, the more my legs and butt hurt.  It is not the same type of hurt I used to feel leaning forward on my R1, but from sitting upright.  Needless to say, it was a great first ride on my new bike and a fun way to start the spring.

One thing I forgot about was the lack of respect bikers get on the road from car drivers.  As we move into the riding season, everyone must be alert.  People get distracted changing radio stations, playing with their cell phones and talking with other passengers.  I am accustomed to the loud pipes on race bikes, which is an indicator to drivers a biker is near.  I noticed some cruisers have quieter pipes and for drivers that switch lanes first and look second, this could be a disaster.  As we get into the warmer weather remember to be aware of your surroundings and share the road.

BE SAFE!

Journey of My Sales Career

February 27, 2012 Leave a comment

My wife and I were talking about the different dealerships I worked at over the years.  I am amazed at how I got into the car business and sustained.  I used to drive a roll-off truck for a sanitation company.  One day sitting at a red light I felt there was more in life than this job.  I went back to the office and quit without knowing what I was going to do. Needless to say, with a toddler and a baby on the way, this did not make my wife very happy.  A friend of mine suggested I get into car sales.  Without experience but a lot of knowledge about cars, I gave it a try.  A few days later, I was off and running.

I worked at Nissan, Ford, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda and BMW.  I was fortunate to be the top salesman at every dealership I worked.  I seemed to have found the profession I was good at and enjoyed.  Car sales have come such a long way from chasing the customer when they pull onto the lot. When I started in this business, I felt like I was hustling for a customer (almost opening the door before they put their car in park) to the more refined Internet sales.

I never forget how nervous I was when I began working for BMW.  On my first day, one of the senior salesman, who had been there for 10 years, said to me, “Black people have never made it at this dealership.”  I didn’t let that discourage me and I was proud when I became his boss 2 ½ years later.  The car business is an ever-changing industry.  A good salesperson must be willing to adapt and continue to learn how to succeed.  The old school salesperson cannot keep up with the pace of the new generation of high tech customers. Some customers are more knowledgeable about the car they want to buy than the salesperson.  A good salesperson will know their competitors as well as (or even better) than they know their own product.

Over the years, I trained a lot of people new to car sales and taught them a lot of what I know.  For me, with all of my experience, I am always open to learning more.  I was taught you never stop growing, learning and trying to become better in your career.  When you get to the point when you think you know it all, that will be the day you start your downfall in whatever career you are in.   Continue learning and start to follow the new trends in your field so you will always remain top notch.
